Former Leeds United targets on move as loan deal for Chelsea midfielder freed up

Two former Leeds United targets are set to be on the move.

The Whites were linked with Brentford star Ollie Watkins earlier this summer following the attacker's excellent season in the Championship.

Yet Leeds instead landed Rodrigo from Valencia, taking advantage of the Spanish club's financial problems to land the 29-year-old for a similar fee Brentford were asking for Watkins.

Meanwhile, the Whites were also said to be keeping tabs on the availability of Michy Batshuyai at Chelsea due to his lack of football at Stamford Bridge.

Leeds: 2020/21 season in preview

The Belgian striker has been deemed surplus to requirements by Frank Lampard having failed to impress last season - but he is still set to sign a contract extension at Stamford Bridge to stop him leaving on a free transfer next summer.

Football.London report that Crystal Palace are set to win the race for Batshuayi.

That will not come as much of a blow to the Whites, who never appeared to solidify any interest they had in the player, especially with question marks over whether the 26-year-old would be able to fit into Marcelo Bielsa's system at Elland Road.

Palace's decision to target Batshuayi comes as a boost to Aston Villa, who have now made a move for Watkins according to Birmingham Live.

The Eagles had been heavily linked to Watkins for the past 12 months but Villa have now swooped to agree a club-record deal to reunite Watkins with Dean Smith, the manager who took him to Griffin Park from Exeter City.

Palace's move for Batshuayi also gives Leeds their own boost.

The Eagles had been leading the race for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, who is set for a Premier League loan after impressing at Charlton Athletic and Swansea City in the Championship last season.

Yet opting for Batshuayi means Palace cannot sign another Chelsea player on loan.

That means Gallagher can go elsewhere, with the Daily Mail reporting that the Whites are keen to land the 20-year-old.

Yet they face competition from fellow newly-promoted side West Brom.
