Former Leeds United striker Steve Morison appointed Cardiff City manager

Former Leeds United striker Steve Morison has been named the new Cardiff City manager.

He was initially appointed the caretaker boss after Mick McCarthy was relieved of his duties on the back of eight consecutive defeats.

The original plan was for the ex-Whites frontman to take charge of the three games that preceded the international break while the club looked for a longer term alternative.

However, him and his temporary backroom staff impressed in that time and have been handed permanent jobs.

They did manage to turn the fortunes around slightly in the trio of matches as they were able to pick up four points from the three games.

In the first of them, Cardiff came from 3-0 down to somehow salvage a point away at Stoke before losing 1-0 to QPR at home.

Morison’s first victory as Bluebirds manager saw his side come from behind again as they overturned a 1-0 deficit against Huddersfield before going on to win 2-1 courtesy of a Kieffer Moore brace.

During his time as a player, Morison will be more fondly remembered for his two spells at Millwall where he scored nearly 100 goals.

His time at Leeds was much less memorable as he scored just five times in 42 games across all competitions.

He joined the club as part of a deal that saw fans’ favourite Luciano Becchio move to Norwich.

Neither player particularly benefitted from the transfer as the Argentine didn’t score a single goal for the Canaries despite joining in the middle of a season where he already got 16 in 26 games.

Following a rather unsuccessful two and a half years at Leeds, Morison returned to Millwall where he managed to regain his goalscoring touch.
