Former Leeds United striker Robbie Fowler is the bookmakers' early favourite to replace Pep Clotet at Birmingham City.
The Blues announced that the Spaniard would leave at the end of the season during lockdown but sacked the head coach on Wednesday night after their 3-1 home defeat to Swansea City.
Having sat 13 points clear of the relegation zone in February, Birmingham are now just four points clear of danger with only four Championship matches remaining.
Clotet was without a win in his last 10 matches after their latest defeat at St Andrew's, triggering an early departure.
BirminghamLive reported earlier this week that Fowler had shown an interest in the soon-to-be-vacant position at Birmingham City.
However, there had been no contact with the 45-year-old who is a free agent after leaving his position with Brisbane Roar.
Fowler spent just over a year with the A-League outfit having joined them in April 2019 but announced at the end of June he would not be returning to Australia citing a desire to be close to his family.
He won the league’s Coach of the Month award for January and February before the coronavirus pandemic saw the league suspended - with Roar standing fourth in the table.
