Former Leeds United striker Robbie Fowler in dramatic A-League managerial debut

Former Leeds United forward Robbie Fowler had VAR to thank on his A-League coaching debut as his Brisbane Roar side snatched a dramatic 1-1 draw with Perth Glory at HBF Park.

Fowler took charge of his opening league match as the Roar’s head coach on Sunday morning, following his appointment back in April.

The former England international replaced Darren Davies as head coach, who had been in interim charge of the club since John Aloisi resigned in December.

Roar finished second bottom of the A-League last season and fell behind in the first half when Chris Ikonomidis side-footed Perth ahead in the 34th minute.

But in the fifth minute of stoppage time Roy O’Donovan produced an equaliser when he prodded home an Aaron Amadi-Holloway knock-down.

But the goal was initially ruled out after the assistant raised his flag for offside, but following a VAR review the goal was given with the referee overturning his original decision.

Fowler, who made 30 appearances for the Whites, has signed a two-year contract with the Australian club and is assisted by former Everton midfielder Tony Grant.
