Former Leeds United star Lee Bowyer in running for Cardiff City manager's job

Former Leeds United midfielder Lee Bowyer is among the frontrunners to take over as Cardiff City manager following Neil Warnock’s departure.

The Bluebirds have reportedly set their sights on a couple of main targets, with former United star Bowyer in the running alongside former Millwall boss Neil Harris.

Cardiff announced Warnock’s departure following a tricky start to the season following their relegation from the Premier League last season.

The club lie 14th in the Championship after their defeat to Bristol City at the weekend, with the 70-year-old leaving the club by mutual consent.

"I am leaving my beloved Bluebirds after over three years of which have been some of the best days in my long football career," Warnock said in a statement.

"It is a shared belief that this is the right time for a new voice as we believe this squad of players is more than capable of getting success."

Cardiff now begin their search for a new manager, with former Leeds favourite Bowyer one of the favourites to take over in South Wales.

The former midfielder’s stock has risen since being handed the reins at Charlton, with the 42-year-old leading them to promotion to the Championship via the League One play-offs.

Bowyer came close to leaving the club during the summer, with a statement from Addicks seemingly confirming his departure in June following a breakdown in talks, before it was announced he had signed a one-year contract extension.

Former Millwall boss Harris though is seen as the favourite to succeed Warnock, having left his post as the Lions’ manager earlier this season.

Like Bowyer, Harris led Millwall back to the Championship via the play-offs in 2017, and led them to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup last season after knocking out three Premier League clubs in Bournemouth, Watford and Leicester City.
