Former Leeds United star insists club must follow Sheffield United's example if they are promoted

Gordon Strachan believes Leeds United should try to copy Sheffield United's blueprint if they are promoted to the Premier League.

The Whites sit top of the Championship with nine games remaining and remain hopeful of returning to the top-flight next season.

Sheffield United, meanwhile, sit seventh in the Premier League table having finished second in the Championship last campaign.

It's been a memorable season for Chris Wilder's side, who have defied all odds to be in contention for European football in their debut campaign back in the top flight.

By contrast, Championship winners Norwich City are rooted to the bottom of the table, with Aston Villa just above them.

The Canaries underspent in many people's eyes, whilst Aston Villa went to the other extreme, dismantling much of the side that earned them promotion through the play-offs.

Sheffield United, by contrast, have supplemented their promotion-winning squad in key areas, adding the likes of Oli McBurnie, Sander Berge and Lys Mousset to complement their options.

With Leeds United in pole position to earn promotion, Strachan has urged Bielsa to follow their Yorkshire rivals' example, should they be promoted this season.

"Sheffield United added a few players, one or two, but they had a system they like, a system they were comfortable with," Strachan told the Sunday People.

"All they had to do was find a couple of players who would make the squad better while understanding the system which they have done."

Bielsa has already put faith in his current crop by awarding long-term contracts to Stuart Dallas, Liam Cooper, Mateusz Klich and Pablo Hernandez.
