Former Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino linked with return to English Championship

Former Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino is reportedly interested in buying Charlton Athletic.

The bombastic 63-year-old was rarely out of the headlines during his three-years as Leeds chairman as he slashed operating costs and staying true to his reputation of being a 'manager eater' by getting through no less than six managers at Elland Road.

After selling half of his stake to Andrea Radrizzani in January 2017, Cellino left the club the following summer and would return to his homeland to take over at Brescia.

But with the Le Rondinelle struggling at the foot of the Serie A table, and Cellino hugely critical of the way that the Italian authorities have handled the coronavirus crisis, the Sun report that he is interested in returning to English football.

Crisis club Charlton are said to be where Cellino's interest lies, with current Addicks owner Tahnoon Nimer said to be struggling to pay next month's wages.

This comes after Nimer's very public spat with Matt Southall, his former East Street Investments partner following their takeover from another controversial figure in Roland Duchatelet, as fans have had to endure yet more chaos in the boardroom.

Lee Bowyer's side currently sit 22nd in the Championship table as they wait to see how the season will be concluded.
