Former Leeds United midfielder backs Jamie Shackleton to seal temporary Elland Road exit

Former Leeds United midfielder Michael Brown believes youngster Jamie Shackleton may benefit from a loan spell away from Elland Road next season.

The Whites academy graduate, who will celebrate his 21st birthday later this year, is considered as one of the brightest youngsters to have emerged from the club's academy over the last few years.

The central-midfielder, who is out-of-contract in West Yorkshire in the summer of 2021, made 22 Championship appearances this season as Leeds secured promotion back to the Premier League.

Being a lifelong Leeds fan, not many players will relish the prospect of playing for the Whites in the Premier League next season more than Shackleton, who scored his first senior goal for the club in the 3-1 victory over Derby County at Pride Park just over a week ago before following it up with another in the 4-0 win against Charlton Athletic last Wednesday evening.

Whilst, of course, it remains to be seen what head coach Marcelo Bielsa will wish to do to his squad this summer, former Whites midfield enforcer Brown believes Shackleton could benefit from a full season out on loan to continue his development.

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown said: "It’s so hard to actually play in that Leeds team but towards the end he’s managed to get a slot and show what he can do, he’s a really exciting prospect.

“That’s what you need. Game time, scoring goals and a little bit of confidence. Of course when the team is winning it helps as well.

“We’ve spoke about [Grady] Diangana at West Brom, the development he’s had this year on loan, you’d definitely say that’s a possibility.”

In total, Shackleton, who operates as a box-to-box midfielder, racked up 24 appearances for the Whites this term, starting five times in the Championship.
