Former Leeds United manager praises Bristol City forward for performance on loan at Peterborough United

Former Leeds United manager Paul Heckingbottom and Grimsby boss Ian Holloway have heaped praise on Bristol City forward Sammie Szmodics.

The former Colchester attacker is on loan at Peterborough United until the end of the season and played a huge role in helping the Posh see off title contenders Rotherham United on Saturday.

Szmodics scored the second goal in the 2-1 win at the Weston Homes Stadium, with Bristol City target Ivan Toney scoring the first of the two.

After a wonderful team move by the Posh, Jack Taylor found Szmodics in space on the left who curled the ball into the net.

And speaking on the EFL on Quest highlights show, Heckingbottom and Holloway were quick to praise the on-loan forward.

Holloway said: "What a fantastic take for Peterborough from Bristol City."

And Heckingbottom followed this up by saying: "He's a hard worker and he's got goals. The run he makes there (for the goal) is typical him, he did it all the time at Colchester.

"Runs from deep, runs from late and does a lot of good work off the ball."

Szmodics has made three appearances for Peterborough since his loan move, scoring one goal. He struggled for game time at Bristol City and managed just 107 minutes of league football before his January move.

Peterborough were close to signing Szmodics permanently in the summer window, with the forward booked for a medical, but after Bristol City came calling the allure of the Championship was too much and he ended up at Ashton Gate.

However, Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has not ruled out making a second move for Szmodics come the summer. He tweeted after completing the loan move to say: "Should we get our act together and put a promotion challenge together, myself, Jason Neale and Stewart Thompson will do all we can to sign Brown, Sammie and Josh in the summer."

Despite this, Lee Johnson sees Szmodics as a part of his future plans at Bristol City and will look to keep hold of him past the summer transfer window.
