Former Leeds United manager and Bristol Rovers legend among contenders to take over at Luton Town

One aspect of football which had ground to a shuddering halt during the coronavirus shutdown was the traditional procession of EFL managers losing their jobs aka the sack race.

However, Luton surprised everyone on Friday after when they announced they had parted company with Graeme Jones after just under a year in charge at Kenilworth Road. The 50-year-old becoming the first manager to lose his job in England for 68 days.

It's been a challenging season for the Hatters on their return to the Championship as they lie second bottom, six points from safety following a summer in which they sold many of their best players.

However, the rationale has not necessarily been a sporting one, with a statement detailing how Jones' exit was prompted by a need for the club "to reduce its cost base".

As and when appoint Luton name a successor to Jones is unclear but the lack of clarity over when football returns gives them time to assess their options and find the right man for the job.

The expectation is that even when the Championship resumes, with nine games remaining, Luton are likely to find themselves playing League One football next season so they could well be in the market for a manager to fit that criteria.

Almost immediately after Graeme Jones' exit, bookmakers installed the man he took over from on a permanent basis, Nathan Jones, as odds-on favourite; who was offered the Bristol Rovers job in December before the Gas appointed Ben Garner.

Beyond Jones, who is rated 4-6 via the Sack Race, is Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson (4-1), Newport County's Michael Flynn (8-1) and former Hibernian, Leeds United and Barnsley manager Paul Heckingbottom (8-1).

The clutch of names below that leading group also, somewhat surprisingly, includes Gas icon Darrell Clarke (20-1) with the 42-year-old less than a year into his job at Walsall.

However, given the names joining him on those odds - Tony Pulis, Chris Hughton, Mark Hughes, who seem unrealistic - it doesn't appear likely that Clarke is in the frame as it stands.
