Former Leeds United boss favourite to replace Rafa Benitez at Newcastle following Spaniard's departure

The bookies have revealed a shock favourite to replace Rafa Benitez at Newcastle United after the Magpies confirmed the Spaniard will leave the club.

In a statement on their website, Newcastle said that 'with disappointment that we announce manager Rafael Benítez will leave Newcastle United upon the expiry of his contract on 30th June 2019.

'We have worked hard to extend Rafa’s contract over a significant period of time, however it has not been - and will not be - possible to reach an agreement with Rafa and his representatives.

'We would like to thank Rafa and his coaching team for their efforts over the last three years and their significant contribution to what has been collectively achieved.

'We would also like to thank our supporters, players and staff for their patience during a period of uncertainty.

'The process to appoint a successor will now begin.'

And of the bookies are to be believed, then former Leeds United head coach Garry Monk could be the next man up at St James', with Paddy Power installing him as the 11/2 favourite.

Monk joined Leeds as manager back in June 2016 after being sacked by Swansea City in December 2015.

Leeds finished seventh in the Championship under Monk before he shocked the club by resigning ahead of the 2017/18 season and landing the manager job at Middlesbrough.

He only lasted until December of that year before joining Birmingham City in March 2018.

Monk did a solid job at Birmingham under the circumstances after a points deduction but was sacked after a breaking down in his relationship with the board.

Despite all of these issues, Monk is the favourite for the Newcastle job, with punters getting behind the idea and clearly impacting the odds.

Jose Mourinho 12/1
