Former Leeds United man issues strong Gaetano Berardi defence

Former Leeds United star Noel Whelan has defended Gaetano Berardi after criticism from fans.

The 31-year-old was hammered for his brief contribution in the 2-1 defeat against Millwall last weekend, despite his red card being rescinded.

Berardi was sent off in the 14th minute and that led to many Leeds fans describing the centre back as someone they cannot count on whilst they struggle with injuries.

The Switzerland international will not miss time due to the fact that Leeds won an appeal on the dismissal leading to any suspension.

Supporters might still feel that Berardi is not the right man to deputise in the absence of club captain Liam Cooper, but Whelan certainly thinks the defender can still do a job.

“I know many fans are saying Berardi is a liability but he was the victim against Millwall of a big decision that the referee got massively wrong,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“Seven red cards is a lot for any player, and there have been plenty of times when his petulance and anger has got the better of him. That’s one thing we can’t put up with.

“But I wouldn’t want to take that aggression out of him. I like the passion and commitment that he brings. On this occasion, Berardi didn’t do a lot wrong.

“He is the third centre-back and Marcelo Bielsa thinks he has fitted in well and provided cover when needed. I would agree with that.

“I don’t think we have a better option to cover for Liam Cooper. People who say he shouldn’t play for Leeds again. That’s not right.”
