Former Leeds United loan star takes aim at Patrick Bamford over controversial goal

Hull City captain Eric Lichaj has criticised Patrick Bamford for his role in the build-up to Leeds United’s second goal on Tuesday evening.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men beat the Tigers 2-0, opening up an 11-point gap over third place in the Championship.

Leeds opened the scoring in the 73rd minute as Hull defender Jordy de Wijs diverted the ball into his own net following a low cross from Helder Costa.

Nine minutes later Gjanni Alioski doubled United’s lead, finishing from an acute angle after Bamford struck the post.

But following his finish, the striker appeared to collide with Hull goalkeeper George Long, who stayed down as Alioski’s finish flew in.

USA international Lichaj, who represented Leeds on loan for the latter half of the 2010-11 season, believed Bamford was at fault for his role in the coming together and could have avoided the clash.

“Professional footballers, you know what you’re doing,” Lichaj told BBC Radio Humberside .

“He know what he’s doing, he could get out of the way but he doesn’t.

“It’s not good, especially if you’re leaving knees to people’s heads, this is not part of the game and needs to be stamped out.”

His view was echoed by Hull manager Grant McCann, who said he believed the goal shouldn’t have stood in his post-match press conference .

“There is two fouls on George, we have seen it right away and you can see the players around the referee,” McCann said.

“I think when Bamford has hit the post, he has ran straight into George to make sure he couldn’t get up and then as Alioski is shooting, he has backed into him.

“It is clear to see and we have all seen it, it reaffirmed it when we have seen it on the big screens. Disappointing.”
