Former Leeds United head coach Jesse Marsch 'set to replace' Nathan Jones as Southampton manager

Former Leeds United head coach Jesse Marsch is reportedly 'set to replace' Nathan Jones as Southampton manager.

According to the Athletic, Marsch is on the brink of becoming the new boss at the south coast club following Jones' dismissal last week. They report that the American held an initial round of talks with the Saints on Monday, where both parties discussed the length of a potential contract.

It is also thought that both Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard were considered for the position, with the south coast team eventually opting for the former Leeds man. Should Southampton confirm the appointment, it would see Marsch return to the Premier League just over a week after leaving his position at Elland Road.

Marsch was relieved of his duties as Whites head coach following a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. Leeds are without a win in the top-flight since November and the board decided that it was time for action, despite having backed the American with four new signings in the January transfer window.

Jones shortly followed Marsch out of the managerial exit door after Southampton lost 2-1 to Wolves, throwing away a 1-0 lead against a side that were down to 10-men from the 27th minute onwards. The Welshman was in charge of eight matches during his time at St Mary's, winning one game and losing the other seven in a spell that lasted just three months.
