Former Leeds United goalkeeper set for shock Manchester City switch

A former Leeds United goalkeeper is set to swap the Championship for Manchester City on the last day of the transfer window, according to reports .

Scott Carson, the Derby County and former England man, is poised to pen a one-year loan deal with the Premier League champions after Pep Guardiola identified him as a suitable third option behind Ederson and Claudio Bravo.

The 33-year-old, who began his professional career with the Whites in 2003, spent just over a season at Elland Road as a teenager before moving to Liverpool in 2005, where he was an unused substitute in their 2005 Champions League victory in Istanbul.

Carson, who had been linked with a move to Nottingham Forest before rumours of a switch to the Etihad Stadium emerged, was also a member of the Rams squad that thwarted Leeds' play-off ambitions last season, though again, he was an unused substitute.

He looks poised to fulfil a role similar to another former United man, Rob Green, who spent last season as a benchwarmer at Chelsea. The mooted move also comes after another ex-Leeds goalkeeper in Andy Lonergan travelled with Liverpool for their pre-season tour of America earlier this summer.

The shotstopper, who also spent spells with West Bromwich Albion and Wigan Athletic, is arguably most notoriously remembered for a goalkeeping blunder in a Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia that cost England a place at the finals and manager Steve McClaren his job.

Leeds meanwhile have unveiled their own new goalkeeper on deadline day, having signed French under-20 international Illan Meslier to provide competition for Kiko Casilla following the departure of Bailey Peacock-Farrell to Burnley earlier this month on a permanent deal.
