Former Leeds United defender admits he expected more from Daniel James

Former Leeds United defender Danny Mills has admitted he expected more from Daniel James after his move to Elland Road in the summer.

The 23-year-old joined from bitter rivals Manchester United in the summer, finally becoming a Whites player having seen a move to West Yorkshire break down in January 2019.

His displays have not been dreadful but he has not set the world alight either in a Leeds side which has underwhelmed.

Mills told Football Insider : "He’s done okay, but if I’m honest I thought he might have done a little bit better.

"Because of the way that Leeds play and the way that he plays I look at it and think, ‘actually, I expected a little bit more’."

James started the season with Manchester United, featuring in their 5-1 dismantling of Leeds on the opening weekend of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign.

He left Old Trafford having made 50 league appearances for the club but did not lift any silverware with the Red Devils.

Leeds were known to be long-term admirers of the former Swansea City man before finally securing his signature and his blistering pace left many salivating at the prospect of seeing him in Marcelo Bielsa's system.

Mills said: "Maybe that’s a little bit harsh because he’s come to a new team but he’s a quality player.

"Maybe it’s because of the fact Leeds aren’t playing particularly well and haven’t done particularly well up to this point.

"I just feel he hasn’t been that spark that I expected he might be. He looked the perfect foil for what they had but that hasn’t come to fruition."

After Leeds United's clash with Leicester City, James will link up with the Wales squad over the international break before returning for the trip to Tottenham Hotspur on 21 November.

His Whites teammate Tyler Roberts has also been included in the Wales squad and will be hoping to feature in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Belarus and Belgium.
