Former Leeds United boss Neil Warnock confirms he will retire at the end of the season

Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock has announced that he will retire at the end of the season following 40 years as a manager.

Warnock, who has achieved eight career promotions over his long history as a coach, told the BBC that this season would ‘absolutely’ be his last in football.

The 70-year-old has managed a plethora of sides, including Huddersfield Town, Plymouth Argyle, Sheffield United, Crystal Palace, QPR, Leeds United and Cardiff City.

He first started out in 1981 taking the reins at Northern Premier League side Gainsborough Trinity.

Throughout the rest of the 80s to early 90s, Warnock jumped around Burton Albion, Scarborough, Notts County and Torquay United before climbing his way up the divisions.

“One or two of my best friends have struggled health-wise this year,” Warnock said to BBC Wales.

“Sharon [wife] and I want to go and see a few things while we’ve got our health really.

“The club (Cardiff) is in a good place and I think it would be appropriate, and likewise they’ve got time to look at candidates and see what they can come up with.

“If I could help them in any way once I call it a day, then great.”

Following his stints in non-league and the lower Football League ladder, he soon caught the eye of Championship clubs through his seeming expertise in achieving promotion.

In total, Warnock gained promotion eight times, with three of them (Sheffield United, QPR and Cardiff) up to the Premier League.

Warnock took over at Elland Road in February 2012 following the dismissal of Simon Grayson, with Leeds sitting tenth in the Championship. After a 14th-place finish that season, he was sacked in April 2013, with Leeds in 12th place, five points off the relegation zone.

To go out on a high, the Bluebirds boss wants to go for a ninth and help get Cardiff back to the summit of English football.
