Former Leeds United boss namechecks League One striker that could lead the line at Elland Road

Former Leeds United boss Steve Evans believes that his former striker Ivan Toney has the ability to lead the line at Elland Road.

Evans managed the Peterborough forward when he was in charge at London Road last season and saw him bag 23 goals - a total he surpassed this season when he found the net 26 times.

Posh narrowly missed out on a place in the League One playoffs after a point-per-game method was used and chairman Darragh MacAnthony has admitted that the former Newcastle man would be allowed to move, if the club receive the right offer.

That has led to Leeds' promotion rivals West Brom being linked, but Evans has named-checked Leeds United when talking about the kind of teams the 24-year-old would succeed in.

Evans told  the Peterborough Telegraph:  “Before anything happened with Ivan, Kayden Jackson became available and me and the chairman fancied him as well.

“We thought we’d done a deal with Accrington for him until Ipswich stepped in and took him so all our attention switched to Ivan and luckily we got him out of Newcastle.

“I’d seen him play for Scunthorpe at the end of the previous season and he was virtually a one-man team.

“I was confident he would become a star and I can honestly see him leading the line at a Premier League club or at the biggest Championship club, Leeds United right now.”

A fee of £15million has been mooted for his signature, with Scottish sides Celtic and Rangers both linked.
