Former Leeds United and England forward Frank Worthington dies, aged 72

Former Leeds United forward Frank Worthington has died, aged 72, his family have confirmed.

Cult hero Worthington was one his generation's most colourful players both on and off the pitch, enjoying a 25-year career that took in 20 clubs and saw him win eight England caps.

His family confirmed his passing a statement on Tuesday morning.

“It is with great sadness that the death is announced of football legend Frank Worthington who passed away last night,” read the statement from Worthington’s family.

"Frank died peacefully in hospital in Huddersfield following a long illness."

His wife, Carol, added: "Frank brought joy to so many people throughout his career and in his private life.

“He will be greatly missed by everyone who loved him so much.”

The Halifax-born Worthington spent the end of 1981-82 season at Elland Road, scoring nine goals in 17 matches but was unable to prevent Allan Clarke's Leeds team from dropping down in Division 2.

He was at his peak during his time at Leicester City, scoring 78 goals in five years, earning England recognition in the process. He began his career at Huddersfield in 1966 before moving to Filbert Street, with a spell at Bolton following before he took in spells in America, Sweden and South Africa.

Huddersfield Town paid their respects to Worthington on Twitter shortly after his passing was confirmed.

"Everyone at #htafc is devastated to hear of the passing of Town legend Frank Worthington. Our thoughts are with his family and friends."

Ex-Leicester, Tottenham and England striker Gary Lineker also offered his condolences.

"Profoundly saddened to hear that Frank Worthington has died. He was my boyhood hero when he was at @LCFC," Lineker tweeted.

"A beautiful footballer, a maverick and a wonderful character who was so kind to this young apprentice when he joined the club. RIP Frank (Elvis)."
