Former Leeds United academy star wins emerging talent prize at Yorkshire media awards ceremony

Former Leeds United academy hopeful Sanchez Payne was the winner of the emerging talent award at the O2 Media Awards bash at Elland Road on Thursday evening.

The 26-year-old came through the Thorp Arch academy and signed a professional deal with the club back in 2011, but would fail to make an impression on the first-team and was released in 2013.

Stints at several non-league sides including Stockport, Bradford Park Avenue and Hyde United would follow before he succesfully moved into the media.

Payne last year landed a regular Monday night show on BBC Radio Leeds called Mixtape, where he showcases up-and-coming presenters and DJs.

And it was his work on this show that was honoured at the annual ceremony in Elland Road's John Charles Stand on Thursday night, with Payne recognised for the start he has made to his broadcasting career.

Payne, who also features in the BBC's '7 Up' series, used his acceptance speech to thanks those that handed him the opportunity and urged those in the room to continue to develop young talent across the media industry.

LeedsLive were present at the ceremony, earning a nomination for best Social and Online Media, while our reporter Kristian Johnson landed the award for News Reporter (Broadcast).
