Former League of Ireland footballer jokes he came up with Coca Cola Christmas advert - and gets hilarious replies on Twitter

Former League of Ireland footballer Pat Flynn has received some hilarious replies after claiming that he came up with the idea for the famous Coca Cola Christmas advert.

Flynn, who played for Shamrock Rovers, Shelbourne, Longford Town and a number of other clubs, posted on Twitter: "In all my years with Coca-Cola this is my proudest achievement. I came up with the idea for this ad all those years ago.

"Everyone in the meeting that day laughed...who’s laughing now. It’s back tonight."

The tweet saw a huge number of responses from far and wide, with many people asking Flynn question about older versions of the ad, which was actually created by American agency W.B. Doner in 1995.

Many others - including the official Coca Cola Ireland account - hilariously thanked him for coming up with the idea.

Coca Cola Ireland replied: "Patrick... We cannot thank you enough for the good tidings that you have brought over the years.

"Through your efforts, and that of the PFFFFA (the Patrick Flynn Foundation for Festive Advertisements), Christmas is truly magical. Thank you."

Below, one user said: "You made some timeless and special for so many people, it never quite feels right to put the tree up without seeing this first! Thank you."

Flynn replied to the above message: "No problem Shev. And remember at Christmas it’s about your presence and not your presents. Have a good one."

Another commented: "Oh my god! I absolutely LOVE the Coca-Cola holidays are coming advert! It is the essence of Christmas! I don't care what anyone else says - Christmas is coming - thank you for coming up with the idea."

Someone else said: "Literally defined when Xmas is allowed to begin while I was growing up, as soon as the 1st person saw the ad! I get a HUGE Mandela Effect on this though....swear blind that the Santa used to wink after drinking! Tell me I'm not mad? Please?!"
