Former landfill site transformed into a pretty riverside park walk

I love discovering new walks and recently, I stumbled across ‘Port Sunlight River Park’ - an old landfill site that has been transformed into a scenic walk.

The park itself opened back in 2014, and provides visitors with a scenic view of the waterfront (if the weather is kind) along with plenty of wildlife. To look at from the beginning of the trail, Port Sunlight River Park doesn’t look like much, but it’s a definite hidden gem once you get to the top.

Since discovering the River Park I’ve been taking my dog here quite regularly. It’s a brisk enough walk to get both of our steps in without getting too knackered.

Let’s talk about the views though, because if the weather is cooperating, visitors can see a crystal clear view of the iconic Liverpool waterfront from afar. Once you’ve walked up to the top of the park, there’s plenty to see from all different angles.

Directly in front of you is the iconic waterfront along with ships at the dock on the Mersey, Otterspool Promenade and the south docks. The reclaimed riverside park is full of wildflowers, singing birds and great views - what’s not to love?

I really like the fact that this place used to be a landfill site, and has now been completely transformed into a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of life. It’s relatively easy to walk up in terms of terrain and there are plenty of benches to perch on to soak up the views.

If you go up to the top then loop round in a circle to the car park, there is plenty of opportunity to catch some wildlife on your way back to the car. You might even see a plane or two flying from Liverpool John Lennon Airport in Speke.

There are plenty of wonderful walks around Liverpool but I’m really glad I found this one. It keeps the dog entertained and gives me an excuse to get some good old fresh air and some peace and quiet.
