Former Lagoon skater wins Dancing On Ice after "the whole of Scotland" backs her

Dancing on Ice superstar Angela Egan - who started skating in Paisley as a young girl - said she felt like she had the whole of Scotland behind her as she skated her way to victory on Sunday night.

The pro skater was crowned the winner of the ITV show alongside celeb partner Capital FM presenter Sonny Jay after wowing viewers with their recreation of Torvill and Dean’s famous Bolero routine, which won them gold in the 1984 Winter Olympics.

Angela and Sonny impressed the judges on the night, coming second on a combined score of 79.5, after getting 39.5 for their George Formby-inspired skate in the first round and a full 40 for their routine to Nathan Evans’ Wellerman, with Sonny once again dressed as Popeye.

But they made their way to lifting the trophy after the votes were counted.

The 34-year-old, who found her love for skating at Paisley Lagoon, said she was “absolutely buzzing” to hear Philip Schofield say her and Sonny’s names and felt like she had the entire country supporting her.

Angela told the Express: “It was just crazy as I felt like it was a really tight final.

“At no point at all did I think that we had it in the bag.

“When we won, I was absolutely buzzing.

“Sonny was fantastic considering he had never done anything like that before.

“And the support from people was just fantastic and really spurred us on.

“There was a point when I felt like we had the whole of Scotland behind us.

“That was just an amazing feeling.”

The skater, whose long career with Disney On Ice stopped last year because of the worldwide shutdown, was working at an Amazon warehouse and living back home at her parents’ when she was chosen to skate on this year’s Dancing On
Ice.

Angela, from Greenock, said the experience was “nothing like she had ever done before.”

She added: “It was all completely different.

“I have never been on TV before so that was all a new experience.

“I have been doing shows for a long time but I have never done anything like this before.

“There were so many fantastic things about it, but one of the highlights for me would have to be the Popeye skate.

“We enjoyed doing that even more than Bolero.”

Unfortunately, due to covid restrictions, there were no big celebratory parties for Angela and Sonny.

However, they were able to head to Capital FM’s HQ in London where they were congratulated on their victory.

Angela has hopes of returning to the Dancing on Ice rink next year.

She has now got her eye on future opportunities and plans to return to coaching.

She added: “I would love to return again and do it next year.

“I’m going to take a few weeks and see what happens.

“I’m looking forward to getting back out there.”
