He is also currently senior independent director and a non-executive director at Domino’s Pizza as well as a non-executive director at Dunelm.

Mr Bull will be succeeded on an interim basis by Paul Van der Burgh while Sue Farr will become interim senior independent director.

Lookers said it will now start a search for a new chairman.

Mr Van der Burgh has previously served as president and managing director of Toyota (GB).

Mr Bull said: "I am sorry to be leaving at this exciting time for Lookers, with the business trading well and continuing to perform strongly."

Mr Van der Burgh added: "Ian has been instrumental in helping us to develop and implement our strategic priorities.

"I would like to thank him on behalf of the board and wish him well for the future."
