Former lace factory in New Basford likely to be turned into apartments

Ambitious plans to transform a former lace factory in New Basford into apartments for young professionals are likely to be given the go-ahead.

Developers want to convert Studio House, in Mount Street, into a complex featuring 31 apartments.

The three-storey former factory was built in the 19th century.

The development is expected to be called The Lace Works in a nod to the site's history.

The plans are due to be discussed by city planners, with officers recommending it should be approved, subject to certain conditions being met.

Conservationists backed the plans - but highlighted a need for lighting.

A council report, publish ahead of the meeting, read: "Nottingham Civic Society supports the principle of the conversion of the Victorian lace factory to apartments, giving the historic building new life and safeguarding the character of the New Basford area but expressed concern about the number of roof lights in the original proposal."

Nottinghamshire Live reported in December the apartments had been earmarked to target young working couples or young families.

Studio House sits next to a huge, four-storey derelict mill called Palmerston House.

That building was previously blocked by a crime gang and Vietnamese men were tending the crops in the historic mill.

Nottinghamshire Live revealed last year developers wanted to transform Palmerston House into a hotel.
