Former Labour MP plots Westminster return

A former Ayrshire MP is plotting a return to Westminster.

Katy Clark, who represented the North Ayrshire and Arran constituency between 2005 and 2015, has made the longlist for selection as Labour's next candidate in Vauxhall, London.

The 52-year-old, a key ally of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, is one of seven prospective candidates to replace the retiring Katy Hoey who has held the seat since 1989.

She faces competition from Lambeth mayor Ibrahim Dogus, Claire Holland, the deputy leader of Lambeth council, London Assembly member Florence Eshalomi, Wandsworth councillor Maurice Macleod, Lambeth councillor Lucy Caldicott and Stephen Beer, a former chair of the constituency party.

Clark, Corbyn's former political secretary, revealed her delight at making the cut in the following tweet.

Clark lost her seat in North Ayrshire to the SNP's Patricia Gibson but her long-standing loyalty to Corbyn saw her join his top team after he became Labour leader.
