Former Kilmarnock star lands derby date in FA Cup managerial debut

Former Kilmarnock star Michael Nelson has been handed a north-east derby for his managerial debut in the FA Cup.

The towering centre-back, who was part of Killie's famous 1-0 win over Celtic in the 2012 League Cup final, is now boss of National League North side Blyth Spartans.

And the Northumberland outfit have been drawn away to Northern League part-timers Whitley Bay in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup.

The two towns are separated by less than seven miles of coastline and both clubs will be hoping fans are given the green light to attend.

Nelson, 40, told Blyth Spartans' Twitter page: "It’s a good draw as far as the location goes and it’s great for the area to have a bit of a local derby.

"Hopefully, that can generate a bit of interest from further afield to help out both clubs financially."

The National League, and its North and South feeder divisions, are due to kick-off next month.

However, the season has been thrown into turmoil following the extension of coronavirus restrictions on supporters not being allowed to watch games, similar to those deployed in Scotland.
