Former Kilmarnock and Rangers striker Kris Boyd reckons Ayrshire side 'overachieved' but backs more success

Former Kilmarnock captain Kris Boyd reckons that the Ayrshire side "overachieved" last season and has urged fans to get behind new manager Angelo Alessio.

The veteran hitman hung up his boots in the summer after being part of the best Killie league finish in 53 years.

And now he hopes that his former side can pick up where they left off.

He told Sky Sports: “I think it’s very important that everyone connected with Kilmarnock stays calm.

“When you look at what was achieved last year, we overachieved.

“There needs to be a sense of realisation of where Kilmarnock should be, and if they don’t get off to a good start then the fans need to stay with the club.

“It’s going to be very difficult when you see that Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs are spending money to bring in players.

“To try and compete with that on a consistent basis is very difficult.

“I think, for me, it’s important that everyone backs the new manager.

“There aren’t a lot of changes on the pitch so that will sort itself out.

“But I think Kilmarnock should do okay this season."
