Former Kerry star Mike Quirke set to be appointed Laois senior footballer manager

Kerry footballer Mike Quirke is set to become the next Laois manager.

Quirke is to be proposed as John Sugrue’s successor at next Monday night’s county board meeting and will almost certainly be ratified without a hitch, the Irish Examiner has reported.

The beanpole midfielder won four All-Irelands during his Kerry career and has emerged as a respected pundit in recent years, while he has cut his management teeth at senior level with his native Kerins O’Rahillys club in Tralee. He works as a coaching officer with the Munster Council.

He will become the third Kerryman to manage a Leinster county in 2020 after the appointment of his former manager Jack O’Connor in Kildare, while his ex-teammate Paul Galvin officially took the reins in Wexford earlier this week.

Quirke will be the fifth Kerry native to manage Laois after Mick O’Dwyer, Liam Kearns, Tomas O Flatharta and Sugrue, who had a progressive two years in the job having led Laois to successive promotions to Division Two as well as to the last 12 of the Championship both this year and last.
