A former Australian swimming coach will be extradited to Queensland to face charges of historical child sexual abuse.

John Reginald Wright appeared in the Bunbury Magistrates Court on Thursday after he was arrested at his home on Wednesday.

The court heard the 78-year-old would remain in police custody and be flown to Queensland with an accompanying police officer on Friday.

His lawyer did not seek bail, but Magistrate Ben Tyers said a Queensland court could consider bail.

He is set to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on October 23.

Queensland police established a task force following an ABC investigation into allegations Mr Wright sexually abused boys he coached in Queensland in the 1980s.
