Former Jets QB Geno Smith expected to sign with Seahawks

Former Jets quarterback Geno Smith is on his way to his fourth team in four years.

Three years after leaving the Jets following a season-ending ACL injury, Smith is expected to sign with the Seattle Seahawks, according to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan. There is no contract yet, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, but Smith will head to Seattle on Wednesday and is widely expected to sign.

Smith had a solid start to his career in New York after being taken in the second round of the 2013 draft. As a starter his rookie season, Smith went 8-8 with 3,046 pass yards, 12 passing touchdowns, 366 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns. However, he did throw 21 interceptions and the Jets failed to make the postseason.

The next two years included a 3-10 season in 2014 and then losing the starting job to Ryan Fitzpatrick after an infamous locker room altercation with IK Enemkpali in 2015. Smith only played in one game that year. In 2016, Smith started one game before tearing his ACL, effectively ending his season and career in New York.

Smith bopped around between the Giants and the Chargers the next two seasons, where he started one game (for the Giants) and threw a combined 40 passes for 220 yards and one touchdown.

With Russell Wilson entrenched as the starter in Seattle, Smith will compete for the backup role with former Broncos first-round pick Paxton Lynch.
