Former Japan PM Shinzo Abe dies

Tokyo: Ex-Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe, 67, died after being shot by a man while campaigning for a parliamentary election in the western city of Nara.

Abe was rushed to hospital after he collapsed at 11.30 am during a campaign speech in the western Japanese city of Nara ahead of Sunday's elections for Japan's upper house of Parliament.

Police suspect shooter is a resident of Nara. According to Agency reports, the accused Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, had served in Japan's military for three years until 2005.

Police have arrested Tetsuya Yamagami.

Yamagamu opened fire on Abe from behind with an apparently homemade gun as he spoke at a drab traffic island in the western city of Nara, Japanese media reported.
