A former Jamie's Italian restaurant which closed when the chain went bust is be turned - into a McDonald's, it has emerged.
Planning documents on a local council website revealed McDonald's plans to replace the failed Italian joint and install two of their iconic ‘yellow golden arches.’
An application to install the LED signage on the building in Guildford, Surrey, was approved on Monday.
Other documents outline the world’s largest fast food chain’s intention to refurbish the building in accordance with the McDonald's brand.
The Jamie’s Italian branch shut in May last year and a planning application was approved in August 2019 to change the site's use to allow it to be a takeaway.
An application letter also revealed plans to alter the building and install new equipment on the roof.
The agent representing McDonald’s, Benjamin Fox, wrote to Guildford Borough Council on November 11.
The letter, available on the council’s website, said: “Please find enclosed Notice 1 under Article 13 that McDonald’s Restaurants Ltd are applying for planning permission for the alterations to the existing shopfront and the installation of new plant equipment to the roof.”
The Jamie’s Italian branch opened in 2009, but shut after the company failed to withstand rising costs and shaky consumer confidence.
The celebrity chef, 44, has since closed 22 of his restaurants leading to 1,000 job losses, but the chain has not completely disappeared as three branches remain open at Gatwick Airport.
McDonald’s, Jamie Oliver and Guildford Borough Council have been contacted for comment.
