Former Jamaica Inn pub site in St Paul's could soon be turned into flats

A former pub in St Paul's could soon be turned into flats.

The Jamaica Inn pub, previously called The Inkerman was a much-loved community space on Grosvenor Road.

A planning application, submitted by DLP Planning Ltd, says the developer would like to demolish the existing building for a new-build development providing residential accommodation.

This would include 10 self-contained flats - a one bedroom flat, 5 two bedroom flats and 4 three bedroom flats.

The development totals 798 sqm and the developers say, as it falls below the 1,000 sqm affordable housing threshold detailed in the Council’s Affordable Housing Practice Note, it will not be providing any affordable accommodation.

The architects behind the development, Norton Mayfield Architects have said: “The development is in accordance with planning policies by providing a range of unit sizes, including family units, which are sustainable, accessible and of high quality.

“The new building envelope has been sensitively designed to ensure they do not have a detrimental impact on the amenity of neighbouring occupiers.

"As such, we consider the scheme to be compliant with relevant planning policy and feel that the development reveals the potential of the site.”

Several applications have been made and withdrawn for the former pub since 2011.

As the location is well served by public transport it is considered suitable for the proposed development to be car free and the developer will also be considering a car share scheme for those living in the property.
