Former Isis nightclub could be transformed into family entertainment centre

A former nightclub in Nottingham which has been closed for a decade could be transformed into a family entertainment complex featuring an e-sports gaming area, climbing wall and restaurants, plans have revealed.

The Mellors Group, the local events company behind the Winter Wonderland and the Nottingham Beach in Old Market Square, wants to redevelop the former ISIS and Black Orchid nightclub, in Redfield Way, near the Showcase Cinema.

The firm said the development would be one of the first of its kind in the world, and would include seven different zones.

They include an e-sports arena where players can take part in competitive video games, a safe parkour and free-running area - an activity typically involving moving and negotiating obstacles by running and jumping - as well as climbing space "not like anything that exists".

The developers also revealed they have signed a franchise agreement with two Dutch restaurants: The Butcher, specialising in ribs, steak and burgers, and Toni Loco, serving pizza.

A sports bar is planned upstairs and up to 100 jobs could be created - such as management, chef and table service roles.

Director Edward Mellors, 39, said: "Everything were are doing in there is a fresh concept. It's made up of about seven zones.

"Nothing like it exists in England and, possibly, even in the world. Everything is being designed and created from scratch."

"It will be wonderful for the city, it really will. We've had interest from Europe and North America already on some of the concepts that we're creating," he added.

"We're a Nottingham company, we're building it or designing it with a company from Europe. But together we've already been approached and asked to do a number of sites throughout Europe and North America.

"It's an exciting time. We want to start it in Nottingham and then everything really will revolve around that."

The developers have focused on the quality of the food and drink available.

"It's a leisure building that has been unused for 10-plus years located right on the ring road of Nottingham," said Mr Mellors.

"It's perfect for what we want to do.

"As a company, we like to be at the cutting edge of the sectors we work in. We created The Beach 10 years ago in Nottingham and lots of cities followed.

"We like to be at the forefront.

"We have seen that building empty and want to do something with it but want to do something special."

Up to 150 parking spaces are expected to serve the facility.

The Mellors Group has submitted plans to Nottingham City Council to revamp the site.

An authority spokesman confirmed the application was still under consideration and said there there was no set date for determination.

However, Mr Mellors said he hoped planning permission would be granted in the coming months and said the redevelopment work was expected to take nine months.

Senior business leaders backed the ambitious plans.

Scott Knowles, chief executive at the East Midlands Chamber, said: “Empty properties on industrial estates attract vandalism and can quickly lead to an area looking run down.

“The plan to turn an empty former nightclub into a family entertainment venue, close to other family activity centres, will regenerate the site and create jobs which is good for the city’s economy and should be welcomed.”

Lorraine Baggs, head of inward investment at Invest in Nottingham, added: “It’s always good to see empty sites brought back into use.

"This is a substantially sized venue close to the city and could work well as a family entertainment venue."

She said it would have a "significant economic benefit to the local area in terms of job creation".
