Former Irish singer opens up about being 'sexually assaulted' by man still working in music industry

An Irish woman has opened up about being “sexually assaulted” while trying to make it in the music industry.

Talented singer Aimee Monroe had decided to leave her band and go solo in 2017 but due to a "sick attack" by a music producer, she was forced to give up on her dreams.

She was in a band called Hello Monroe but had decided to go solo prior to the assault in a Dublin bar. It was when Aimee and her team were there and she was introduced to the producer that everything started to go wrong.

She said: “We were in a crowded smoking area and he touched my breasts and I said, ‘What are you doing? Don’t do that again’.”

Aimee tried to get away from him but as she turned to leave, he followed her.

She continued: “He just punched me right up my skirt and he tried to stick his fingers inside of my underwear.”

Aimee left, and added: “This intuitive feeling in my stomach just hit me and as I’m walking, he grabs me. He nearly crushes my hand in his and he just starts dragging me along the street.

“He said, ‘When you came into the studio, I wanted to f**k you, and I’m going to f**k you now’. I ran out onto the street, in front of a taxi. I got into the passenger seat and I said, ‘Go, he’s going to rape me’.

“He was in the back. He looked demonic, the taxi driver had to drag him out of the car.”

Speaking on BBC show Music’s Dirty Secrets: Women Fight Back, Aimee said the incident ruined her love of music.

According to the programme, Aimee’s attacker is still working in the industry.

She reported her attack, but local CCTV wasn’t working and the case was dropped.
