Former Ireland women's player waiting to receive caps almost 40 years later

A former Republic of Ireland women's player says she and other ex-stars are waiting to receive caps that they won in the 1970's and 80's.

Madeline O' Brien, 57, claims to have contacted the FAI and FIFA over several caps earned from September 1980 to 1988 and says other players from as far back as 1973 haven't yet received theirs.

O'Brien has hit out at the association, claiming that players from the period haven't received the recognition they deserve.

"There's an awful lot of girls in Limerick, Dublin, Cork and Galway who haven't got their caps," O'Brien told the Irish Mirror.

"We need to be given recognition so that we can show young girls, and younger women, that things can be achieved.

"If they don't recognise us and if I'm coaching girls, what's the point in me telling them to go play for Ireland?

"They need to bring women in and ask what they can do to make it better for women in football and what can we offer.

"Give us respect, recognition and allow us to have some sort of input."

O'Brien, who trained with the first-ever Ireland Women's squad for their clash with Scotland in 1973, says that several players from the era haven't received their caps, but some others have.

The Limerick native claims to have contacted the FAI in 2019, and has also been in touch with FIFA and the Department of Sport in recent years seeking clarity on the matter.

The Irish Daily Mirror have contacted the FAI for comment.

The Women's Football Association of Ireland (WFAI) was established in 1973 as an independent body, but has been affiliated with the FAI since 1991.

She was also part of a Ballynanty contingent during that period, including Marianne Slattery, Mary Joyce, Geraldine Grace and Mary Gavan, that helped pave the way for future generations of women's footballers.
