Former Ireland striker Anthony Stokes signs for Iranian side Persepolis

Anthony Stokes has completed his move to Iranian league leaders Persepolis.

The former Republic of Ireland striker will travel to Tehran today to meet his new team-mates and could make his debut at the weekend.

Ex-Celtic ace Stokes, 31, has played for clubs in Greece, Iran and Turkey since leaving Scottish side Hibs in 2018.

Stokes was a free agent since terminating his contract with Turkish club Adana Demirspor in November.

The Dubliner is believed to have signed a six-month deal and said: “I’m happy to be joining Persepolis.

“I look forward to coming to Tehran and seeing the CEO, the coach, my teammates and the fans.

“I thank everyone at the club for providing me with the opportunity to be in Persepolis. I am excited.”

Eamon Zayed, the well known League of Ireland striker who has been playing in America of late, played for Persepolis between 2011 and 2013.
