Former Ireland star Mark Lawrenson tells how he dined with Ghislaine Maxwell and her family when Oxford boss

Former Ireland defender Mark Lawrenson has revealed that he used to dine with Ghislaine Maxwell as he once worked for her father, Robert.

British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, 58, is awaiting trial on charges of trafficking minors for her ex-boyfriend and convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. She has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Liverpool legend Lawrenson crossed paths with the Maxwell family long before any allegations were made against Ghislaine and her connection with dead sex offender Epstein.

Having ended his time with Liverpool, Lawrenson was appointed manager of Oxford United who were then owned by media magnate Robert Maxwell.

He told Off the Ball's The Football Show: "When I managed at Oxford - I finished at Liverpool on the Thursday and managed Oxford on the Friday - I worked for her dad, Robert Maxwell, and Kevin Maxwell, his son.

"I was invited to a couple of lunches which she was at. I was actually very honoured, because all of the family were there, and me.

"I remember one Sunday lunch we had, and it was all their kids, Robert Maxwell and his wife.

"We had a couple of glasses of wine and then Robert Maxwell would do this thing where he would ask them questions. They were all very bright and educated people.

"He stood up, slightly the worse for wear, and he said, primarily looking at the boys in the family: 'She [Ghislaine] is the only person in this family with any balls!'

"Well, look how that turned out."

Lawrenson also said he was shocked that US President Donald Trump said he "wished her well" when asked recently about Ghislaine Maxwell's trial.

Referring to 'Filthy Rich' the shocking documentary into Epstein's sexual abuses, the former Ireland defender said: "Jesus Christ! You only have to watch that for five minutes and you think 'how on earth'".

Trump said in a press conference this week: "I just wish her well frankly. I have met her numerous times over the years, especially since I lived in Palm Beach and I guess they lived in Palm Beach.

"But I wish her well, whatever it is.”
