Former Ireland star Jon Walters retires from football

Ireland star Jon Walters has today announced his retirement from football due to an injury on his achilles.

The Liverpool-born striker scored some vital goals for the Boys in Green, most notably a double against Bosnia-Herzegovina in a Euro 2016 qualifying play-off to send us to the tournament.

He also famously equalised for Ireland against Austria in World Cup qualification in 2017.

In a tweet this afternoon, Walters said: "Isn’t it ironic...my Achilles heel has literally been my Achilles heel and finished me off!

"I am now retired from playing football

"It’s been epic

"Veni vidi vici”.

He earned 54 caps for the Republic of Ireland between 2010 and 2019, scoring 14 goals.
