Former Ireland player Darron Gibson released by Salford after end of League Two season

Former Ireland international Darron Gibson has been released by Salford City after the end of the League Two season.

Gibson was one of a host of players not awarded a new contract after Covid-19 prematurely ended the Manchester club's campaign.

The midfielder joined the club in February and only got to make four appearances during their maiden season in the Football League.

Graham Alexander’s side finished in mid-table after the division was decided on points per game.

Derry-born Gibson, 32, is one of 11 players released by the club after finishing mid-table.

Gibson played for Manchester United and Everton in the past but made just four appearances for Salford in their first season in the Football League.

It leaves 32-year-old Gibson without a club in a career that stalled after a series of injuries and off-the-field incidents.

Once tipped to become a first-team regular at Manchester United, Gibson's career has included spells at Everton, Sunderland and Wigan before his signing for Salford.

The 27-times capped midfielder for Ireland has twice been charged for drink driving offences.

Salford, part-owned by former Manchester United stars Gary and Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham and Nicky Butt, still have former Dundalk star Richie Towell on their books.
