Former Intercontinental Champion requests release from WWE

Former Intercontinental Champion Luke Harper has requested his release from WWE .

The 39-year-old, real name Jonathan Huber, made the announcement on Twitter this evening, fuelling speculation he could join rival company AEW.

Harper, who rose to fame as part of the Wyatt Family and is a two-time tag team champion, revealed: "As of this evening, I have requested a release from WWE.

"The past six years have been a simple amazing journey around the world and back with lifelong friends and family. I am proud of it all and proud to say I shared the ring with my co-workers.

"This decision, as difficult as it was, feels right for myself and WWE. My goal in the future is to continue to grow as a performer and person and continue to make my family proud.

As Brodie Lee, the agile big man starred for the likes of Ring of Honor and Dragon Gate USA, before signing with WWE in early 2012.

The 6ft 5in behemoth debuted as part of Bray Wyatt's Wyatt Family on NXT later that year and often teamed with stablemate Eric Rowan.

Together they won the NXT Tag Team Championship, then with Wyatt stormed the main roster in 2013, leading to huge early success and a stunning feud with The Shield.

The Rochester, New York native broke out on his own and captured the Intercontinental title from Dolph Ziggler on Raw in November 2014, losing it back to him at TLC in December.

Rejoining the Wyatt Family, he later claimed SmackDown tag team title gold with Wyatt and Randy Orton, then another with Rowan in 2018, now competing as The Bludgeon Brothers.

The duo won the belts at WrestleMania 34 by defeating The New Day and defending champions The Usos, enjoying a reign ending on the SmackDown after SummerSlam to The New Day.

But the following day, it was announced Rowan had suffered a torn right bicep, and he also underwent surgery for a wrist injury, before returning to the ring without any fanfare last month.

He took to Twitter to reveal he had been cleared since February 6, but WWE had no plans for him, declaring he would give his all in an acclaimed match against Dominik Dijakovic at WrestleMania Axxess.

Following that, he competed in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania 35, but failed to win as he was eliminated by former Wyatt Family ally Braun Strowman.
