Former inmate carried out two robberies to pay off prison drug debt

A drug debt accrued in prison was the catalyst for a man committing two robberies.

Daryl Curtis was threatened over money owed and raided a Spar shop and Shell petrol station, Bristol Crown Court heard.

In the shop robbery he was armed with a screwdriver and in the petrol station he was armed with a machete.

Curtis, 37, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to robberies and possessing blades on September 5 and 6 last year.

The Recorder Mr Brown jailed him for 54 months.

He also handed Curtis a seven-year Criminal Behaviour Order, banning him from retail premises in the BS7 area.

He told Curtis: "You have caused significant harm, alarm or distress to those working in shops and garages in BS7 as a result of shoplifting and robbery."

Ian Fenny, prosecuting, said Curtis was wearing a mask when he walked into the Spar shop in Filton Avenue, holding a screwdriver.

As a staff member retreated he prised the till free and ran from the shop to a car close by.

The next day Curtis walked into the Shell garage shop on Gloucester Road, armed with a machete.

Mr Fenny said: "A staff member concluded the safest option was to allow him to take a till containing around £300."

When Curtis demanded access to the safe it was declined, the court heard.

He then grabbed spirits worth £262.90 and £200 worth of cigarettes and tobacco and fled.

Later that day he brandished a machete at police called to Meadow House in Copley Gardens, Bristol.

Ellen McAnaw, defending, said: "He has a history of substance misuse.

"In the months preceding he had a custodial sentence.

"He amassed a drug debt in custody."

Miss McAnaw said her client and his family were threatened and, out of desperation, he committed the robberies to pay off the debt.
