Former Illinois QB Jeff George Jr. to transfer to Michigan

Former Illinois quarterback Jeff George Jr. announced Wednesday he will transfer to Michigan as a graduate transfer.

George, the son of former Illini great and NFL quarterback Jeff George, struggled with ineffective passing during his two seasons in Champaign. He played in 11 games the last two seasons with nine starts and completed only 48 percent of his passes for 1,743 yards with 11 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

George, who is 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, is likely to join the Wolverines in a walk-on role. They already expect a four-way battle among scholarship signal callers Shea Patterson, Brandon Peters, Dylan McCaffrey and Joe Milton.

George announced his decision to leave the Illini in January after it was clear the program had moved on from him as an option despite little depth in the position. He threw at least one interception in five of seven games he appeared in last season when the Illini's offense was stymied.

Illinois' offense, using various quarterbacks, was one of the worst in the country, ranking 126th of 129 teams in scoring (15.4 points per game) and total offense (280.4 yards per game). The Illini ranked 106th in passing offense (174.8 ypg) and 120th in completion percentage (49.6 percent).
