Former HMRC offices in Swansea to be turned into 350-bed student accommodation

Swansea will have a new 350-bed accommodation block for students as developers have taken over former HMRC offices.

The site called Ty Nant, which is believed to be worth £35 million and is directly opposite Swansea train station, has been bought up by Watkin Jones.

It previously housed HMRC's valuation office agency.

The developer has just put the finishing touches to a scheme offering 967 beds in total in a bid to drive up the level of student accommodation in the city.

Watkin Jones said the plan would help offer "much needed" housing for the student population that has grown by 11.5% in the space of three years.

Alex Pease, chief investment officer at Watkin Jones, said: " Swansea is a fantastic place to be a student and the recent growth in student numbers reflects the continued success of the city's universities.

"There is pressure on local housing for students that in turn puts pressure on the wider market, so we're excited to bring forward our proposals to revitalise this site for the long-term and create a brilliant new place to live."

He added: "We continue to see very strong demand for high-quality student homes across the UK.

"Students and their families increasingly value purpose-built and managed accommodation, which offers inbuilt community and wellbeing support.

"This year has seen the largest ever proportion of school leavers applying to university, a trend that is projected to continue alongside increased international demand."

The scheme comes after students were given a glimpse of the newest student accommodation in the city, which features a giant slide and festival zone. Take a look inside the complex here.

As part of the Morfa Road development, which has a total of 706 luxurious bedrooms, it overlooks the River Tawe.

It also has a picture house, along with multiple themed sky lounges and courtyard spaces where people can relax.
