Former Hibs youngster Sam Stanton links up with ex-teammate in bid to win Championship deal

Former Hibernian midfielder Sam Stanton says he is "weighing up his options" after linking up with Dundee in a bid to retain fitness following a stint in the United States.

The 26-year-old, who made 70 appearances for the men in green and white, left USL club Phoenix Rising earlier this month after the COVID-19 pandemic halted the campaign stateside.

He has since returned to Scotland and has been offered the chance to prove himself to former teammate James McPake after joining the Dark Blues for first team training.

Stanton told the Evening Telegraph : "For now, I’m just training hard every day and will see what happens. I know it’s a difficult time for clubs but you still have to be ready for whatever opportunities may come up.

“I’m grateful to James. I know him from our time together at Hibs and he’s been great about me training with Dundee.

“Obviously, the American season finished last month. It doesn’t start again until next summer so I’m back home and just going to weigh up my options."

Stanton was handed his debut alongside McPake in Hibs' 4-0 defeat to Rangers at Ibrox in January 2012 before going out on loan to Cowdenbeath.

Further loan spells at Livingston, Dumbarton and Dundee United followed when Stanton fell out of the team under Alan Stubbs.

He joined United permanently in 2018, making 74 appearances in three years before swapping the city of Discovery for Arizona in January 2020.

Stanton helped the side to victory in the USL conference play off final, however the championship game with Tampa Bay Rowdies was postponed, then abandoned altogether after a coronavirus outbreak among the opposition.
