Former Hibs striker Steven Fletcher linked with Celtic after rejecting Sheffield Wednesday deal

Former Hibernian striker Steven Fletcher could return to Scotland after failing to agree a contract extension at Sheffield Wednesday.

The Scotland cap surprisingly turned down a deal at Hillsborough despite being the Owls’ top scorer this season.

Ex-Hibs star Fletcher, who scored 52 times in 189 appearances for the club, is now set to leave the English Championship club at the end of June.

The 33-year-old has been linked with a return to the Scottish Premiership, with Celtic reportedly interested in signing the player on a season-long deal.

Several English sides are also understood to be considering a move for Fletcher - who netted 13 league goals for Wednesday in the 2019/20 campaign.

Former club Burnley, who Fletcher joined when he left Hibs in 2009, are among the clubs monitoring the situation.

The striker has ten goals in 33 Scotland appearances, including two hattricks against Gibraltar in 2015.

However, he has not made himself available for international selection since the 3-2 win over Israel in November 2018.

Scotland youth international Fraser Preston and former Livingston loanee Jack Stobbs are also set to leave Wednesday on the expiry of their deals.
