Former Hibs midfielder Stephen Glass appointed Aberdeen boss ahead of Premiership Euro showdown

Former Hibernian midfielder Stephen Glass has officially been appointed manager of Premiership rivals Aberdeen.

The 44-year-old will replace Derek McInnes for the end of season run in after the long-serving boss departed the club last month.

Celtic captain and ex-Easter Road teammate Scott Brown was linked with a surprise move to Pittodrie as assistant to the former Dons midfielder, but that has not yet been confirmed.

Glass previously managed Atlanta United II, the reserve side of Aberdeen’s MLS-based partner club.

He take over with Aberdeen seven points off Hibs in the race for third and the European places heading into the Premiership's end of season split.

The Dons have managed just one goal in their last ten games, but host the men in green and white before the end of the season in May.

Glass told the Aberdeen website: "Having worked with a number of esteemed managers and coaches in the game, my football education has been extensive and my time with Atlanta United II has afforded me the chance to develop some exciting young players and hone my coaching skills.

“From the initial conversations I have had with the Chairman and the board this week I am hugely excited about the plans that are being put in place for next season. Dons’ fans can be assured by my drive for Aberdeen to compete fiercely and to win.”

Glass made almost 100 appearances for Hibs across a four year spell in Leith, helping the side qualify for Europe with a third-place finish in the 2004/05 campaign.

The two sides meet at Pittodrie on Wednesday, May 12 in the penultimate fixture of the campaign.

Dons chairman Dave Cormack added: “His winning mentality, having been mentored in the ‘Aberdeen Way’ from an early age by the likes of Teddy Scott, Alex Smith and Willie Miller, and desire to embrace the club’s strategy were key factors in our decision.

"He is committed to an exciting, attacking style of football and maximising our player budget so we can get the best out of, and right balance between, experienced players and, crucially, developing and playing young first team players.
