Former Hibs defender Steven Whittaker joins Dunfermline on player-coach deal

Former Hibernian defender Steven Whittaker has joined Dunfermline Athletic as a player-coach.

The 36-year-old departed Easter Road at the end of his contract last month after returning to the club on a three-year deal in 2017.

Whittaker, who has 31 caps for Scotland, played 69 times for Hibs in his second spell in Leith after rejoining from Norwich City on a free transfer.

The full back was sent off in his last game in green and white during a 3-1 defeat to Aberdeen at Pittodrie before Scottish football's coronavirus-induced shutdown.

He initially came through the Hibs academy before leaving for Rangers in 2007 having lifted the League Cup with the Easter Road club.

He would go on to form part of the Gers' side that reached the 2008 Uefa Cup final against Zenit St Petersburg before joining The Canaries in 2012.

Whittaker will split his time at The Pars between a playing and coaching role alongside Dunfermline manager Stevie Crawford after arriving at East End Park on a one-year deal.

He briefly sampled life in the dugout last season, assisting Eddie May during his stint in caretaker charge following the sacking of Paul Heckingbottom.

The Pars - who have fended off interest in striker Kevin Nisbet from Hibs - also completed a move for former Dundee United defender Paul Watson earlier on Monday.
