Former Hibs boss backs Aberdeen Easter Road reunion to be Dons success story

Former Hibernian boss Bobby Williamson has backed Scott Brown and Stephen Glass to be a successful managerial duo should the pair secure a mini-Easter Road reunion at Aberdeen

The 35-year-old has been touted as a potential number two to his one-time Leith teammate should the current Atlanta United 2 boss replace Derek McInnes in the Pittodrie hotseat.

Brown is reportedly keen on prolonging his playing career even if he fails to agree a new deal to remain at Celtic and could be allowed a role as player-assistant in the Granite City, although the Parkhead side are understood to have offered him new terms.

Williamson brought Glass to Hibs in 2003 after the Scotland cap had been released by Watford at around the same time Brown was making inroads into the first team as part of the Easter Road 'golden generation'.

The pair would later form part of the last Hibs side to secure a third place finish in the top flight under Tony Mowbray following Williamson's departure to Plymouth Argyle, though they did reach the League Cup final during his tenure, dumping out Celtic and Rangers en route to Hampden.

But while he wasn't aware of any prior relationship between the duo before this proposal, he backed it to be a shrewd move if Dons chairman Dave Cormack can pull it off.

"I don’t think Broony is finished at Celtic, but sometimes players have to leave a club in order to get back," he told the Scottish Sun.

"I signed Stephen after he’d been released by Watford. He’d always caught my eye at Aberdeen.

“Broony was established in the team when he came so I’ve no idea whether the two of them were friendly.

"But the impression I got about Stephen was that he wasn’t a drinker, he was settled at home.

“He’s gone and started his coaching career in America. It could be that he wants a new challenge in his own country."

Williamson added: “I wouldn’t rule out a scenario where Scott leaves Celtic, goes away and starts his career as a coach somewhere else, then ends up going back to Celtic.

"To be honest, I’d be surprised if Scott wanted to stop playing completely.

“Becoming a player-coach somewhere would make sense to me. He’s still got the energy to play in the Premiership comfortably."

Cormack and Darren Eales, who is also on the board at MLS partner Atlanta, are expected to make their final decision in the coming weeks with the side three points behind Hibs in the Scottish Premiership’s third spot.

Youth coaches Paul Sheerin and Barry Robson will take temporary charge of the side ahead of the trip to Dundee United this weekend.
